Service Learning and Experiences

Motor Activity Clinic

During my first semester, I volunteered at the Natatorium here at IU Indy. Here, I helped kids with disabilities such as Autism or Down syndrome stay fit and active through various activities. These activities included basketball, swimming, throwing sports balls around, etc. It was over 6 Saturdays, and at the very end was an award ceremony to celebrate the kids' completion of the clinic. It was amazing to see and learn what these kids could do and how they impacted me as a person.

Six Word Reflection

I would describe my first semester here at IU Indy as exciting, challenging, intriguing, stressful, overwhelming, and rewarding. With the many ups and downs, especially as a student-athlete, I learned a lot and I feel like I have grown as a person in this short amount of time. I am excited about what the future holds for me!

FCA Year 1

I also joined a club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where every Monday we would meet to discuss our faith and learn lessons and apply them to our everyday lives. We also held an Operation Christmas Child fundraiser where we raised money to buy gifts for children in third-world countries so they could celebrate Christmas as well as spread our faith. This was fun because I was able to write notes to the kids and in the future make a kid smile when they receive their shoe box. I learned that I can be a part of something bigger than myself.

FCA Year 2

During my first semester as a sophomore at IU Indy, I got the opportunity to be a part of Operation Christmas Child for a second time. Just like the first time, we held a fundraiser in order to buy gifts for children in third world countries and put those gifts into decorative shoe boxes. My favorite part of this experience was writing and drawing cards that will hopefully make the kids smile and feel loved. Furthermore, I learned that even a small group of people can accomplish so much. With only a few hours, we were able to get through over 100 boxes!

My Time in KINE-P 403

During my time in Theory of Cardio. Fitness and Physiology, I have learned a lot and experienced various activities that one doesn't get in a normal class. The one that stuck out the most was a lab where I had to analyze the mechanics that go into sprinting of various people including myself through videos. This intrigued me as not only a Cross Country and Track runner for IU Indy, but a student of the sport. I want to work with runners in the future as a physical therapist and learning the biomechanics of running through this hands on lab progressed my knowledge.
